Shopify CSV: variants import as separate products (blank Handle)

What's happening: Your variants show up as separate products, or the import says a row has no handle.

How to fix it

1. Every row of a product, including variant and image rows, needs the same Handle value.
2. Rows of one product must sit together, top to bottom, with no other product's rows between them.
3. Handles must be lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens: blue-shirt, not Blue Shirt.

Not sure which rows are affected? Drop the CSV into the free checker: it lists every problem row by row, in your browser (the file isn't uploaded).
